Finding
used motorcycle parts on the internet can be a challenging experience. Most
motorcycle salvage yards are small mom and pop type operations that can be hard
to find and even harder to deal with. Hopefully with this article you will be
able to learn how to find the used motorcycle parts you need and be able to
work a deal on them.
First
we need to define what is a used part for a motorcycle and where can you find
them.
second
we need to determine quality of used parts and what you should buy used and
what parts you should always buy new.
Thirdly
we need to talk about warranty on used parts and how do we warrant the parts
and how will a problem be corrected if we need to use the warranty.
So
what is a used motorcycle part. It is any functioning part from a motorcycle.
It can be a lower triple clamp to a rear wheel to a used tire to sprockets and
chain. It is basically anything from a motorcycle that has been removed that is
still in serviceable condition, that can be reinstalled on your motorcycle and
continue service.
What
is the quality of a used part? The range a used motorcycle part can be from
"NOS" which means New Old Stock to " like new" to
"used part" to "paint-able" to "for parts only".
A NOS part is a NEW PART that has been purchased by a motorcycle salvage yard
to be resold. It is a part that has never been installed but is not usually
purchased from a motorcycle dealer. A like new part is a motorcycle part that is
in a pristine condition that is as close to a new as a used part can be but
still have been used and may some but very little wear. A used part is just
that a good working part that is serviceable but not new in any way. It is a
fully functioning part that is ready to be installed. A paint-able part is a
part that has some damage or scratches but is still useable but would need to
be repaired or painted to fully return it back to original condition. A gas
tank or fender can be sold in a paint-able condition. That is they are a
useable part that would need dents removed and painted to be fully restored.
Finally there is for parts only, this is a usually a non functioning part that
can be taken apart to used the parts to fix other motorcycle parts. Like a set
of carburetors that is sold as parts only. The customer would remove the good
parts from the parts only carburetors and fix his set of carburetors. These are
low cost parts that help keep old motorcycles on the road. and lastly some
parts you always want to purchase new, like brake pads and tires and battery s
these parts are critical parts on your motorcycle and have a short shelf life.
One
of the most important questions you need to ask when buying used motorcycle
parts is "does it have a warranty". Some items almost never have a
warranty. Electrical Items almost always come on a "AS IS" basis as
they are easily destroyed if improperly installed or the underlying problem is
not repaired before the part is changed. That is why you almost never see any
warranty on electrical items, even from a motorcycle dealer. You should always
ask for a warranty and most places will give a standard 30 day warranty, but
you should always ask. It is better to find out before you buy then after the
part arrives and it doesn't work and you find out then it is sold without a
warranty. Make sure any warranty given is in writing on the receipt. If you
have any questions always ask them.
